Support Our WorkThe 'Underwater' pinball machine, released by Recel in 1976, emerged during a vibrant period in pinball history when aquatic and nautical themes were particularly popular among manufacturers. The machine captured the public's facination with its wartime submarine theme sparked by the myriad of popular films on the subject such as Ice Station Zebra, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea and Assault on the Wayne.
The machine's playfield design likely featured classic electro-mechanical elements typical of the period, decorated with artwork depicting underwater scenes, marine life, and deep-sea diving equipment. As with other Recel machines of this era, it was exported from Madrid, Spain under the Recel label while sold domestically under the Petaco name.
While not one of Recel's most widely-produced or well-documented machines, 'Underwater' represents an important piece of pinball history from the final years of the electro-mechanical era. It stands as an example of how pinball manufacturers incorporated popular cultural themes into their designs, creating immersive experiences despite the technological limitations of the time.
